Sheik 'n' Beik NYC Anniversary party

If you’re wondering what’s sweet in NYC this weekend (but please don’t get too sentimental, save it for Valentine’s..), you will be happy to know that the original Sheik ‘n’ Beik crew – Julio, Fong, Varick & Romainville – will be finally re-united this Saturday February 5th at Don Hill’s, Tribeca, to celebrate its 3rd anniversary. The sound by the four residents will be enhanced and shaped by James Barnes’s hypnotic video edits for a full sensory experience in true Sheik ‘n’ Beik style.

“Sheik ‘n’ Beik” started out as a weekly party in New York City, but has grown ever since, becoming a music and art installation project, with the mission to “integrate innovative and high quality music with the most cutting edge art at each event”.

Heading into their 4th year of operations, they’re now fully global, with parties in Rio de Janeiro, Beirut, Bogota & London, to name a few, and they’re considered a lifestyle by many people around the world. 2011 is looking fabulous already as they’re warming their engines up for the busiest year ever and taking off to Miami, Paris, Los Angeles & Las Vegas just in the next couple of months.

As a matter of fact, I will be playing at Sheik ‘n’ Beik Miami 2011 @ Nikki Beach, along with Martin Buttrich (Desolat/Coocon) , Behrouz (Yoshitoshi/Monique Musique), Matt Tolfrey vs. Inxec (Leftroom/Rekids), Pablo Cahn-Speyer (Cadenza/8-bit), Mikael Stavostrand (Sunset Diskos/Highgrade Records), Jeffrey Scott (Esthetik), of course Julio + Fong (Sheik ‘n’ Beik) , & several other guest performers to be announced very soon. So make sure you get your tickets: with this daytime party Sheik ‘n’ Beik, will take electronic music events to the next level of craziness..

Disco and Synth Pop Songs

I really love Thursdays. It is the day when I usually like to post the playlists I make, usually covering specific subjects; and today you’re in for a real treat!  I’ve been using things like Grooveshark and LastFM and Pandora lately and I’ve been stumbling upon (no pun intended) tons of really cool songs from the early golden ages of synth pop / discofunk. These need to be re-presented to the younger generations on the internet today. This is music from an era when there was no massive use of MIDI, quantization, autotune or anything of the sort. Grooves, soul, harmony, melody, lyrics… Real songs rather than beats or tracks. What happened to the golden days of music production when it was strictly about talent? Many of these songs I had heard before, several I didn’t know existed. The question is…. Which ones do you like?

The playlist includes tracks by artists like Midnight Star, Dazz Band, Chaka Khan, Cameo, Michael Jackson, Skyy, Sheila E, Thomas Dolby, Con Funk Shun, Ronnie Hudson, Slave, Prince and more…Click on either the image above or the image below (instructions) to stream the playlist on your browser immediately. No hazzle. I promise.

Comment below…. No need to be shy.
